Part of the whimsy of owning bearded iris is that the sheer volume of cultivars gives free rein to the hybridiser's imagination when it comes to naming — hence the aptly titled Milk in My Coffee.
With rare café-au-lait colouring and warm, cinnamon-toned falls, this iris brings a vintage charm to garden borders. Creamy standards are gently ruffled, folding softly over a rich, copper base. A surprise orange beard warms the entire bloom, creating a soft but grounded contrast. Ideal for naturalistic gardens, earth-toned palettes, or contemporary spaces looking for a softer feature flower.
- Standards: White, faint olive-yellow at base of midrib
- Falls: Mid brown lightening slightly towards centre as flower ages
- Beard: Mustard yellow
- Fragrance: Slight sweet
- Height: 91cm
- Bloom time: Very early
- Hybridiser: Barry Blyth (2014)
Why choose it:
- Unusual warm-toned colouring
- Excellent for rustic or naturalistic schemes
- Beautiful companion to structural natives and earthy textures
Milk in my Coffee is a reported re-bloomer. A very light application of low nitrogen after the first flush fertiliser may encourage repeat flowers.
